No Signal Is The New Luxury

Five retreats that take you somewhere your phone matters less, from the Alps to the Indian Ocean

There was a time when luxury meant being reachable anywhere. The upgraded data plan, the hotel with the fastest Wi-Fi, the inbox that followed you onto the sun lounger. Somewhere along the way that stopped feeling like a privilege and started feeling like a leash.

The new status symbol is quieter. It is the out-of-office you actually mean. It is a week where nobody can find you, because you're somewhere the landscape asks more of your attention than your screen does. Snow on pine forests, a lake at dawn, a mountain path that needs you to look where you're putting your feet.

You don't need a sabbatical to get there. You need a few days, a small group, and a place that makes putting the phone down feel like the obvious thing to do. These retreats, running from this October into spring 2027, are a good place to start.

Chamonix makes you look up

October in Chamonix is the Alps with the volume turned down. The summer crowds have gone, the light turns golden and the mountains settle into a slower rhythm. Bedrock Foundation's trail and yoga retreat, run with Planet Nusa, takes a group of up to eight people into that stillness from 26 to 30 October.

Each morning you choose your pace. Join the trail running group if you want something more dynamic, or head out with the hikers if you'd rather wander. You can switch between the two depending on how you feel that day, which is exactly the kind of permission most of us forget to give ourselves. Days include yoga, gourmet stops at mountain huts, dips in alpine pools and dinners cooked by the in-house chef, before a shared brunch sends you home.

You'll stay in a chalet with views of Mont Blanc, in shared double and twin rooms. The four nights cost €1,450, with payment plans available on request. Travel to Chamonix, one dinner in town and one hut lunch aren't included.

Iceland

If you want to go properly quiet, go north. BONFIRE's Iceland Winter Retreat runs for ten days in late November, from the 19th to the 28th, with a group of just seven. It was designed for artists and creative thinkers, but its focus is experience rather than output, which makes it a gift for anyone whose work lives in their head.

Home is Héraðsskólinn, a 1920s schoolhouse turned guesthouse in Laugarvatn, a lakeside village in the Golden Circle that Icelandic writers and musicians have used as a creative refuge for generations. Everyone has a private room with lake or mountain views. The programme moves between waterfalls, lava tunnels and silent whale watching, geothermal spa visits, and one-to-one mentoring, with shared meals and fire in the evenings.

The private room package is €3,100, excluding flights. Applications for the 2026 edition closed at the end of June, so treat this one as a retreat to watch. BONFIRE also runs a summer edition under the midnight sun, and its next open call is the moment to move.

Swedish winters teach you to

rest

There is something about a Nordic winter that makes slowing down feel less like a choice and more like common sense. Two retreats in Sweden lean into exactly that.

The Wild Times will see in the new year with Wild Sweden, running from 30 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Expect yoga, meditation, forest walks in the snow, creative workshops, saunas and a great deal of rest. It is a gentler way to cross the threshold into a new year than a crowded bar at midnight, and the kind of start that tends to stay with you.

For a longer reset, eco psyche's Nordic Winter Retreat takes you to Gylsboda, a small historic village in the forests of southern Sweden, for four nights and five days. You'll stay in the Quarry Houses, a collection of restored traditional Swedish homes surrounded by granite quarries, frozen lakes and woodland.

Mornings begin with journaling, breathwork and yoga. Afternoons end at Gylsboda Kallbadhus, a wood-fired sauna suspended above the old quarry, with an optional icy lake dip before you warm up again. Evenings are candlelight, restorative yoga and vegetarian or vegan food from private chef Sayna Mahdaviani.

Rooms range from €995 for a single bed in a shared loft to €1,450 per person for a king room with a private balcony. It is roughly two and a half hours from Copenhagen by train and bus, with a transfer arranged from the final bus station.

Sri Lanka brings you back to your body

If winter isn't your season, wait for the warmth. Flow State Wellness Studio's RISE Sri Lanka retreat runs from 28 March to 3 April 2027 at Lanka Yoga, a sanctuary on the mangrove-lined shores of Koggala Lake in the south of the island.

Days start with practice in open-sided shalas, followed by a plant-based breakfast. From there you'll find a balance of shared adventures and genuine freedom. There's a surf lesson, a boat trip across the lake to a nearby temple, an afternoon in Galle Fort and a cooking lesson on site. In between, you can lounge by the infinity pool, take a tuk tuk to the coast, snorkel with turtles or book an Ayurvedic massage. Twice-daily sessions of movement, breathwork, meditation and self-inquiry are led by founder Kate Moon.

Six nights are full board, with airport transfers from Colombo included. Remaining rooms start at $3,199 per person in a shared garden triple, rising to $3,999 for a single lakefront room. Flights, travel insurance and your visa are extra.

A week away is a beautiful thing, but the point was never really the destination. It's what happens to your nervous system when nothing is asking for your attention, and that is something you can practise at home long before you pack a bag.

Start small. A phone that sleeps in another room. A morning walk without a podcast. An evening where the only light is a candle. The most luxurious thing you can own this year is your own attention. Take it back.
