The wellness rules I live by at 40

wellness Aug 21, 2026

As you get older, your thoughts about your health change. You start thinking less about reducing and more about gaining; less about fixing every single problem, and more about just feeling generally well. Instead of wanting to look great for summer, you're looking forward to how you want to feel and move, and how you want to present yourself for many years to come. The good news (and the thing that most companies don't tell you) is that the things that actually help at this point in your life are much quieter and gentler than you probably thought. There isn't going to be a big dramatic change that saves you. There are only a few mundane habits that, when consistently practiced, add up to something that looks a lot like ease. These are the ones I keep coming back to.

Foundation of everything else is strength.

If I could choose one principle to carry forward, it would be this: build, don't shrink. I've stopped trying to create the "perfect" plate of food and instead I focus on creating meals that contain enough protein. Protein helps fill you up, preserves the muscle you've worked for, and quietly supports the way your body ages. Perfection was never the goal. Sufficiency is. The same reasoning has led me to lift heavier weights. Muscle is possibly the best investment you can make in the woman you'll become in two decades, and it's far more valuable than the calories you burn attempting to lose weight. Focusing on strength over size isn't a compromise. It's the more honest ambition. Movement gently, and frequently. Not all movement needs to require exertion to be important. Five or ten minutes of gentle movement such as rebounding, walking, lying on a vibrating machine, or placing your legs against the wall does more for how I feel than any intense workout. It makes me less swollen, lighter, and more aware in my body. I have particularly grown fond of taking a brief walk immediately after eating whenever possible.

Although it may seem like a trivial act spending a few extra minutes on your feet rather than sitting down immediately the impact it has on how settled you feel is far greater than the effort required. Wellness at this stage prioritizes gentleness and frequency over heroic acts of exercise.

Long-term skin care, not short-term trends.

There is always a tendency to seek out the newest and strongest skincare treatment, believing it can solve all problems instantly. However, I have learned to resist this temptation. Healthy skin is developed through consistent practice rather than constant reinvention. I alternate my skincare routine using products that brighten during the day and retinoids at night to allow my skin to receive the benefits without causing continuous irritation due to overwhelming it with multiple treatments simultaneously. Prior to seeking more aggressive treatments, I rely on the quieter workhorses of peptides and growth factors, providing them sufficient time to work effectively. Seeking the next miracle product is typically a distraction from allowing the previous sensible product to perform as intended. Patience is an essential component of successful skin care.

Calmness is a skincare component.

This was probably the last component of skin care that I began to believe in. Managing stress is not separate from how you look and feel; it is integral to it. Practicing box breathing, placing your phone on "Do Not Disturb," spending a few minutes outdoors when everything seems overwhelming although these practices are unglamorous  my skin recognizes when I am stressed and when I am not.

Therefore, I attempt to start each day with recovery rather than staring at a screen. Ten minutes of restorative activity such as using red light therapy or engaging in a moment of quiet reflection serves me better than ten minutes spent scrolling through social media before I am even fully conscious. Protecting your energy ultimately becomes one of the most effective anti-aging practices available; unfortunately, nobody is selling it in a jar. Reduced stress deliberately maintained creates a quiet effect that no cream can replicate.

Reducing inflammation

Ultimately, there is an unglamorous truth that underpins everything else. Reducing alcohol consumption, consuming sufficient amounts of water, fermenting foods, eating healthy fats, and getting adequate sleep will contribute more positively to how you look and feel than virtually anything else you can purchase. These are fundamental principles, and they are unremarkable precisely because they function as intended. Reducing inflammation will create a stable foundation upon which everything else can develop. None of this constitutes a "glow-up" in the conventional sense of the term. It represents something calmer and more enduring than that. The objective was never to arrive at forty years old transformed; rather, it was to arrive at forty years old feeling well and continuing to feel that way for an extended period thereafter. Feel better, not busier — especially now.
