Every so often, a beauty tip gets flung out into the ether that feels so gloriously simple it’s impossible to ignore. No expensive products. No complicated routine. Just a small adjustment that promises smoother skin and fewer lines.
The latest to circulate is the side straw hack.
The idea is straightforward. Instead of drinking through a straw placed directly in the centre of your lips, you position it to the side of your mouth. The logic is that this reduces repetitive puckering in the same area, theoretically preventing fine lines around the lips.

But when you really think about it… is there any truth behind it?

What actually works then?
If the goal is to protect the skin around the mouth, the fundamentals are far more effective than straw positioning.
Daily sun protection is critical. UV exposure is one of the primary drivers of collagen breakdown and fine lines.
Hydration, both internal and topical, helps maintain skin plumpness and resilience. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can support moisture retention, while richer creams help protect the skin barrier.

Consistency matters more than perfection.
Ultimately, the side straw hack is not harmful. If it makes you more mindful of repetitive movements, there is no downside to trying it.
