Deinfluenced: The Wellness Rules Worth Breaking

wellness Jul 31, 2026

The wellness rules you have full permission to break.

Somewhere along the way, wellness picked up a rulebook. Wake at 5am. Hit 10,000 steps. Never miss a day. If those rules have ever left you feeling like you're falling short, know this: you were never the problem. The rules were. So consider this a gentle, de-influencing, wellness edition. A permission slip to let go of what was never serving you.

You don't need to wake up at 5am

The 5am club was never designed with real life in mind, and certainly not with women in mind. Your sleep is the foundation everything else rests on, and dragging yourself up in the dark after a broken night sleep isn't discipline. It's depleting. A better morning doesn't start with an earlier alarm, it starts with a kinder night. Protect your sleep and let your wake-up time be the result of proper rest, not a badge earned at its expense.

You don't need a two hour morning routine

Twelve steps before breakfast films beautifully, but it quietly whispers that unless your morning looks like a retreat, you're doing it wrong. You're not. What you need is a morning that makes you feel grounded. Simple, easy to follow, shaped around your schedule rather than fighting against it. SPF, water, a little movement if the day allows. If your routine leaves you feeling steady and good in yourself, it's working. That's the whole job.

You don't need to hit exactly 10,000 steps

That number came from marketing, not science, and a fixed target turns movement into a test you can fail. Work to a range instead, somewhere between 7,000 and 10,000 steps, and let it flex with your week. Movement is a gift to your body, not a number holding your day hostage.

You don't need to train hard every single day

Rest is not the absence of progress. It's where progress quietly happens. After a heavy gym session, your muscles need time to repair, and it's the stretching and rest days that let you come back stronger. Follow big sessions with something gentle and remind yourself: recovery isn't a lapse in the plan. It is the plan.

You don't need to eat perfectly

Your body was never asking for perfection. It was asking for balance. Eat foods that nourish you most of the time and truly enjoy the rest, no scorecard in sight. Listen to your cycle, because your energy and appetite shift across the month, and honour your cravings rather than overriding them. A craving is information, not a failure of willpower. Nourishment over restriction, always.

Eat for how you want to feel

The question is beautifully simple: which foods make you feel good? Notice what sits well and doesn't bloat you, and build your meals around it. Choose enough protein, fibre and slow-releasing carbs to carry you gently through the afternoon, and go easy on caffeine and sugar in the evening, because good sleep often begins at dinner. Your body offers feedback after every meal. Eating well is simply the art of listening.

The only rule worth keeping

Progress, not perfection. Some weeks you'll do it all. Other weeks the bare minimum will be enough, truly. The women who feel best long term aren't the ones following the strictest rules. They're the ones who stopped needing them.

Consider yourself de-influenced and free to NOT set the 5am alarm.
