I Tried The Viral Chia Seed Water For 7 Days

wellness Aug 14, 2026

Chia seed water has been all over my feed, promising a flatter, lighter middle and a gut that finally behaves. Curious and a little sceptical, I gave it a proper go for a week to see whether the hype held up.

The recipe

A tablespoon of chia seeds stirred into a large glass of water, left a few minutes to swell, then finished with lemon, cucumber and fresh mint. It takes barely five minutes at first, which was a relief. The taste is fine, fresh and faintly spa-like, but it isn't something I looked forward to the way I do my morning coffee. Functional rather than a treat.

How the week went

For the first two or three days, nothing much happened, which is probably where a lot of people quietly give up. By day four, though, my digestion had found its rhythm. Before this, I was semi-regular at best, going most days but skipping others with no real pattern. Over the second half of the week everything became far more consistent. Even on an office day, when I'm reliably too self-conscious to go, managed to, which anyone who's ever been loo-shy at work will understand is no small win. By Friday I felt genuinely less bloated and a little lighter through my middle.

So, was it worth it?

Life-changing? Probably not, and I'd be wary of anyone who says a glass of seeds will overhaul your life. Helpful? Definitely. It did the one thing it promised, gently and without drama. My only real gripe was that I never grew to enjoy drinking it, which got me thinking about getting the same benefit in a form I'd actually look forward to.

Why it works

It isn't magic, it's fibre. Chia seeds are rich in soluble fibre, and when they meet water they form a soft gel that helps soften stool and keep things moving comfortably. They bring a little extra along too, as a good plant source of omega-3s, some protein, and minerals like magnesium and calcium, while the gel helps you feel fuller for longer. Starting the day with the water also tops up your hydration, which matters more for bloating than we tend to credit. Unglamorous, but sensibly good for you.

The version I'd actually reach for

The benefit I wanted came down to the chia and its fibre, and there's no rule that it has to arrive in a glass of water. So I've started making coconut and mango chia pudding instead. Same gut-friendly seeds, but it feels like a treat rather than a task, and that, if we're honest, is what makes any habit actually stick.

Coconut and mango chia pudding

Serves 1, best made the night before.

  • 3 tbsp chia seeds
  • 200ml coconut milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ ripe mango, diced
  • Toasted coconut flakes and a sprig of mint, to finish

Method:

  • The night before, stir the chia seeds, coconut milk, vanilla and sweetener together in a jar until well combined
  • Stir again after five minutes to break up any clumps, then cover and chill overnight
  • In the morning, top with diced mango, toasted coconut and a little mint

Same few minutes the water took, fibre benefit fully intact, and something you'd happily order rather than merely tolerate. The seeds do the quiet work either way. I just prefer mine with mango.
